Snowmobiling
There are over 350 miles of groomed snowmobiling trails and ski trails in the Grand Marais and Gunflint Trail area of Minnesota available for your snowmobiling and skiing enjoyment. Hungry Jack Lodge Resort is right on one of the groomed snowmobile spur trails of the Gunflint Snowmobile Trail system and caters to people who are on snowmobile and ice fishing vacations.
The Gunflint Snowmobile Trail system is usually groomed twice a week by various snowmobile clubs in the Grand Marais, MN area and the U.S. Forest Service. The snowmobile routes include the Canadian Border on Lake Saganaga, Grand Portage Snowmobile Trail, and are connected to North Shore Snowmobile Trail. It’s a little known fact, however, the Gunflint Trail area is one of the best snowmobiling areas in the mid-west for a winter family snowmobile vacation.

Weekly Snow Depth and Snow Depth Ranking Maps
To view Snow Depth and Snow Depth Ranking maps compiled by the University of Minnesota since the 2002-2003 winter seasons go to: http://climate.umn.edu/doc/snowmap.htm. These maps are compiled on a weekly basis. We found them interesting & informative and think that you will too.
Duration and Depth of Snow Cover
The following data was taken from the Duration and Depth of Snow Cover report, published by the University of Minnesota. The figures are from the statistics of the Gunflint Trail weather reporting station, located approximately 8 miles from Grand Marias, MN. which is very near Hungry Jack Lodge & Campground. The report is dated 1982 and represents statistics covering 20 seasons from 1959 to 1979. Though the data is somewhat old, it is the most current data that we have been able to find.
The above mentioned report states that the Gunflint Trail weather reporting station, on the average, “has the longest season of snow cover days of any (Minnesota weather) station”. The report also says that the Gunflint station is in the “heaviest snow area of the state”.
Average Seasonal Snow Cover Days
Snow depth Number of days
6″ 160 days
12″ 150 days
24″ 100 days
Per the report: “no first or last date of snow cover observations were made at the site. However, an estimate of the first date of 1” snow cover is November 1st and the estimated last date in spring is May 5th.
